Furniture and Household Products Plastic Mold Manufacturing

Altınel Kalıp manufactures durable plastic injection molds in Konya, Turkey for furniture and household products, including garden furniture, chair and table parts, office furniture components, and kitchen and home goods. For large parts, we put the balance between short cycle time, robust construction and an attractive surface at the center of mold design.

Materials

In furniture and household products, the material is selected according to load-bearing requirements, operating environment (indoor or outdoor), food contact and target cost.

  • PP copolymer and UV-stabilized PP: Outdoor furniture such as garden chairs, tables and sun loungers; light weight, impact strength and color stability in sunlight.
  • PP GF30 and PA6 GF30: Office chair star bases, armrests and load-bearing connectors; high rigidity and fatigue strength.
  • HDPE: Storage boxes, buckets and baskets; toughness and chemical resistance.
  • PS, SAN and PC: Transparent kitchen storage containers and decorative products; clear appearance.
  • ABS: Handles, lids and accessories; good surface finish and easy coloring.
  • TPE: Non-slip feet, grip surfaces and two-component (2K) applications.

For kitchen products in contact with food, a declaration of compliance with regulations such as (EU) No 10/2011 is obtained from the resin supplier. For long-run garden furniture molds, 1.2738, which provides uniform hardness across large cross-sections, is preferred, while 1.2083 mold steel is preferred for household products requiring high gloss.

Mold design

Furniture molds are typically large, heavy molds that require high clamping force. The design addresses the load-bearing strength of the part and the efficiency of the mold together.

  • Rib and strength design: Rib structures are used in chair seats and backrests to provide strength without adding weight; gas-assisted injection molding (GAIM) is considered to prevent sink marks in thick sections.
  • Hot runner: On large parts, multi-point valve-gated hot runners shorten the flow length and leave no gate vestige on visible surfaces.
  • Ejection: Air poppet valves and stripper plates are planned for deep buckets and boxes, and a balanced ejector layout for large, flat parts.
  • Multi-cavity and family molds: For small accessories such as foot caps, connectors and lids, the cavity count is determined by annual volume.
  • Cooling: In thick-walled furniture parts, most of the cycle time is spent on cooling; cooling channels are concentrated accordingly.
  • Stackability: Draft angles and geometry are checked at the design stage so that chairs and containers can be stacked.

Surface quality

In furniture and household products, the surface directly influences the end user's purchasing decision. Textures that imitate natural materials and a consistent color appearance stand out in this sector.

  • Wood, rattan and wicker textures: Textures applied to the mold surface of garden furniture give the plastic the look of natural materials and hide scratches from everyday use.
  • VDI 3400 matte finishes: EDM finishes in the 27–36 range reduce flow lines and gloss variation on large flat areas.
  • Glossy surfaces: An SPI A2–B1 polish is applied to kitchenware and decorative products, and SPI A1–A2 to transparent storage containers.
  • Texture and draft: On deeply textured surfaces, sufficient draft angle is added to the design so that the part is ejected without drag marks.

In colored production, masterbatch dispersion and mold temperature are optimized during trial shots to prevent color streaking on the surface. For outdoor products, sun-induced fading is prevented by choosing the right material and UV additive rather than by surface treatment.

Tolerances

In furniture and household products, tolerances are mostly related to assembly and ease of use: snap-fit connections, screw holes, lid-to-container fit and stackability.

CriterionTypical value
Cavity and core machining accuracy±0.02 mm [PLACEHOLDER]
Snap-fit and screw connection dimensions (ISO 20457)TG4–TG5 [PLACEHOLDER]
General dimensions of large parts (ISO 20457)TG6–TG7

In large PP and HDPE parts, shrinkage is high and direction-dependent; over lengths approaching one meter, even small differences in shrinkage rate can translate into dimensional differences of several millimeters. For parts such as table tops and chair seats, flatness and warpage are therefore controlled through gate location, balanced cooling and, if necessary, a post-mold cooling fixture. The floor contact plane of chair legs should also be defined separately. For products assembled by the end user, snap-fits are tuned so that they can be engaged by hand but will not come loose on their own.

CNC machining

The large dimensions of furniture molds call for the right CNC machining strategy and stable machining over long run times.

  • Machining large cavities and cores: In chair, table and box molds, most of the material is removed by roughing; semi-finishing and finishing passes then prepare the surface for texturing.
  • Deep cooling channels: Cooling lines in large plates are made by deep-hole drilling; baffles and bubblers are installed in hard-to-reach areas.
  • Pattern details: Deep, sharp-edged details such as rattan and weave patterns, as well as narrow ribs, are machined by precision milling or sinker EDM.
  • Mold components: Ejector plates, guide bushings and slide assemblies are precisely machined and fitted.

For molds with patterns and textures, CAM programs are prepared to achieve uniform depth and appearance across every area of the surface. For frequently changing household product designs, interchangeable cavity inserts allow new models to be produced on the same mold base at lower cost.

Trial shots

In furniture and household product molds, trial shots are the stage where dimensions, strength, appearance and cycle time are verified together.

  • T0 trial: Fill balance on large parts, hot runner zone settings and ejection are checked.
  • T1 samples: Submitted with a dimensional report for evaluation of appearance, color and texture.
  • Functional trials: Chair and table parts are assembled to check seating, stacking and connection fit; at the customer's request, samples are prepared for testing to strength standards such as EN 581 for outdoor furniture.
  • Cycle time optimization: In thick-walled parts, cooling time and mold temperature are adjusted to achieve the shortest cycle without warpage.
  • Process window: Approved settings are recorded, including color and masterbatch ratio.

For household products with lids, container and lid mold trials are run together so that closure and sealing fit are approved in a single step.

Quality control

Furniture and household products are produced in high volumes and often go straight to retail shelves. Consistent appearance and trouble-free assembly are therefore the focus of quality control.

  • Dimensional inspection: Assembly points, fits and critical dimensions are measured on samples and periodic production parts; form inspection of large parts by 3D scanning is an increasingly common practice in the industry.
  • Visual inspection: Flow lines, color variation, sink marks and texture defects are evaluated against approved samples.
  • Material documentation: UV stabilization, food contact declarations of compliance and resin lot information are tracked through supplier documents.
  • Traceability: Date stamps, material markings and recycling codes built into the mold allow the production period and material of the product to be identified.

For customers with ISO 9001-based supplier requirements, inspection reports and shipping documentation are prepared on request. The mold maintenance plan ensures that components that wear with shot count are replaced on time.

Multi-Cavity Plastic Injection Mold

Multi-Cavity Plastic Injection Mold

The multi-cavity plastic injection mold with its ejector system illustrates a mold structure designed for the efficient production of high-volume parts such as furniture accessories and household products. In molds of this type, a balanced runner layout and ejector placement ensure that every cavity produces parts of the same quality.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to build a plastic chair mold?
Lead time varies with part size, hot runner system, texture and number of cavities. Approximately 10–16 weeks [PLACEHOLDER] can be expected for large garden furniture molds and 4–8 weeks [PLACEHOLDER] for small household product molds. Design, machining, texturing, assembly and T0/T1 trials are included in this time.
Which plastic should be used for garden furniture?
UV-stabilized PP copolymer is the most common choice for outdoor furniture. For load-bearing parts that require higher strength, glass-fiber-reinforced PP or PA6 GF30 can be used.
Can a mold be made from my existing sample?
Yes. For products without a technical drawing or 3D model, a 3D model can be created from the sample and mold design can proceed from there. During modeling, we also recommend the draft and wall thickness corrections needed for moldability.
Can a wood or rattan look texture be applied to the mold?
Wood, rattan, wicker and leather-look textures can be applied to the mold surface. The texture is selected by evaluating the part's ejection draft and the mold cost together.
